Comparative physiology of the pulmonary blood-gas barrier: the unique avian solution
Am J Physiol Regul Integr Comp Physiol West 297: R1625

Supplemental Video

This short video shows part of an electron tomography study of chicken lung. To produce it, a 1 ìm thick section was tilted at various angles and transmission EM images were recorded. These were then processed by appropriate software to provide the three-dimensional rotating image. This clearly shows part of an epithelial bridge together with its connections to two pulmonary capillaries. Note the thickening of the bridge at the contact with the capillary wall. Only a 1 ìm wide ribbon of the bridge is shown because this is the thickness of the section. The bridges are actually much wider.
