In the coming issues, you may notice a new subheading for members of our Associate Editors. For the past two years, Guest Editors working closely with the Journal to produce high quality manuscripts covering topics of special interest have been playing an increasingly important role with our Journal. Special calls for papers have long been a part of our Journal, but beginning with the EB 2004, we began to open up calls for papers to respected scientists not necessarily connected to the Journal. We began with Dr. Jeff Schwartz and his topic "The Mechanisms and Impact of Fetal Physiological Programming," which was presented at the EB 2004 meeting. Dr. Schwartz worked very closely with us and edited an enormous number of manuscripts submitted in response to his special call. It was a lot of work, which Dr. Schwartz carried off with aplomb. The result was one of our most successful issues ever in January 2005.
The overwhelming support for and success of Dr. Schwartzs special call prompted us to continue the project, enlisting the help of many IUPS/EB 2005 meeting presenters. We have since then approached scientists to put forward special call ideas of their own, which we have been more than happy to incorporate into our call structure. In this way, we have had the valuable contributions from Drs. Karen J. Berkley and Steve Zalcman for their "Sex and Gender Differences in Pain and Inflammation," Dr. Mordecai Blaustein for his "Molecular Mechanisms Linking Salt to Hypertension" call, Dr. Andrej Romanovsky for his "Physiology and Pharmacology of Temperature Regulation" call, and Dr. Celia Sladek for her "Neurohypophyseal Hormones: From Genomics and Physiology to Disease" call.
The work these Guest Editors have invested into these projects has been immense, and we are very excited by the results. In the coming months, we will have more calls for papers, including one from Drs. Chris Baylis and Kate Denton for "Sex Differences in Renal and Cardiovascular Function: Physiology and Pathophysiology," as well as additional topics from the upcoming EB 2006 meeting.
I would like to thank all of our Guest Editors, as well as those authors who submitted their manuscripts to the calls. We greatly appreciate these efforts and contributions and look forward to all our future guest editor/call for papers collaborations.
